Poll Tax
The poll tax is a flat tax, something that every citizen had to pay in order to raise money for the government, and exercise their right to vote. In the 1960's during the civil rights movement the South instituted the poll tax to deprive people of low income, particular the black community, of their right to vote. It was the South's way of getting around the 14th amendment, this tax was not abolished until the 24th amendment was passed in 1964. Payin' The 1960's Poll Tax
